Who should give?
If you call Moorooka Presbyterian your church 'home' then you ought to contribute financially for its work.
This is because of the principle that those who receive the ministry of the gospel ought to support those who minister the gospel to them. Or, put differently, those who receive spiritually ought to provide materially.
1 Corinthians 9:9 For it is written in the Law of Moses: “Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain.” Is it about oxen that God is concerned? 10 Surely he says this for us, doesn’t he? Yes, this was written for us, because whoever plows and threshes should be able to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. 11 If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? 12 If others have this right of support from you, shouldn’t we have it all the more?
How much should I give?
While the Old Testament does speak of giving 10%, the New Testament does not major on this figure.
However, this does not mean we are simply 'released' from giving 10%. Rather, the obligation remains for us to give, and further, we now have opportunity to give more.
One aspect of being transformed by the gospel is that we use our money no longer for our own sake, but now for the sake of others and for God. Like Jesus, our attitude will be to take less ourselves in order to give to make others rich. As a church, our generosity with money will be one of the badges that demonstrates we belong to the kingdom of heaven.
2 Corinthians 8:9 For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich. 10 And here is my judgment about what is best for you in this matter. Last year you were the first not only to give but also to have the desire to do so. 11 Now finish the work, so that your eager willingness to do it may be matched by your completion of it, according to your means. 12 For if the willingness is there, the gift is acceptable according to what one has, not according to what one does not have.
So, how much? If we are released from 10%, is there a figure? We cannot give you one. There will be seasons in life where you may be able to give more or less.
If in doubt, why not give more than 10%? The human heart immediately jumps to giving less than 10%, but that is a manifestation of our sinfulness, not our renewal. God has not even held back his own Son from us. He deserves all we have. And we know he will provide for us all we need.
Will God provide?
We have a saying at Moorooka based on the Lord's prayer, in which we are instructed to call God as our Father:
Will God give you what you want?
No! But it is better than that. He will always give you exactly what you need.
This is a great saying. God will not give you your want. Instead, because he is your Father, he will make sure you always get what you need.
Whatever situation God has placed us in life, it is crucial for us to see our context through the lens of the gospel wherein we know God is our Father. A good father is always working good for his children - and even if his children do not appreciate it at the time. The news of the gospel for us in that God is our good Father. He is working for our good, even in the midst of whatever financial situation we are in. Yes, God will provide for you and for the church.
How often?
Regular is best - weekly, fortnightly, monthly. The Apostle Paul encouraged weekly (1 Cor 16:1-4).
Regular giving provides the church with a measure of certainty for the sake of budgetting. It also means you have to look at your budget and make a regular financial commitment to the work of the gospel. You can bring this to God, asking him to help you be generous, thankful, and trusting in his continued provision for you.
